Variation on Vicki's design
What if the plan was reversed so that the courtyard and circulation were on the south side of the site? That way they would both be shaded from the hot sun by the eaves and all the roofs would face the sun to recieve maximum solar panel exposure.

Mmmm. I think it is really worth considering all the possibilities. With this arrangement the courtyard would be more protected from north too. I have been wondering about which way to slope the roof as far as the most efficient way of blowing away the hot air. Should the roof be sloped away from the prevailing breezes.
Lets talk more at the meeting tonight to work out which way works best.
As for solar panels, I have been looking at some solar panels just developed at the ANU. Rather than a big plane of silicon, they slice it and layer it in a panel. It means that the size panel required to make a certain amount of electricity is much smaller. I'll put a link on the blog.
