Domus version 123

We have been struggling to agree on a plan that works and that fits onto the site so have agreed to each have one last go at completing a design that works based on the principles we have discussed and the design elements we would like to incorporate before finalising a plan this sunday. Here is my effort: This picture is a horizontal section with the roof shown in transparency over the top. It may look confusing, but the walls all continue up to the roof line.
I have broken up the plan into three areas: private rooms for sleeping and working, a living/dining kitchen building and a shaded courtyard that links the two. I have gone back to single storey for simplicity and to keep a low profile and I have angled the roofs down towards the north to capture the most solar energy and shade the buildings and courtyard from the sun. The sloped roofs will also encourage convection currents, sucking the hot air out of the buildings. Thermal mass is used to regulate the temperatures in both buildings. The large roof area provides a large catchment for water. I am researching drainage methods for the courtyard in heavy rain, and it looks like there are a number of systems available, such as a drain in the centre of the courtyard that feeds an underground tank, providing even more water catchment area.

Hi Silas,

Thats looking really good. I think we are working in tandem as lots of the things you have added I have also included so I think we should be able to get the plan sorted without too much trouble. Lets see what Daniel comes up with. Check out the next blog entry about water/drainage. I'll put it on the main site as others like Catherine and Amy might be interested.
I'll post my design shortly so you can see it. I am also going to put together a palate of materials and colours. I'll post that later tonight.
