Minimal Development

Thought I'd get the ball rolling with the Minima development input. Here are a couple of pictures from a sketchup model I've been mucking around with. It's at an early stage in terms of refinement and demountability but my basic idea was to start with the furniture and then work out from there. I'm going to look into making it smaller and more of a fold-out type thing, but I'm still struggling in my mind about how to interpret minimal space and what level of comfort to accommodate. I do like the idea of having the bed as a seperate and permanent part of the space (as in the loft idea here) although if it doubled as a bench for the desk the space could be smaller. The glass wall won't stay - it's just so you coul see inside (I should have just left it off). Any thoughts?

Far out! I just sent you a huge comment and then lost the lot because I didn't do something right. In short I said I love the structural thing happening in your design. The rest was all about my interpretation of minimal which for me is to do with comfort zones not claustrophic tight body measurements.

Silas I really like the idea of designing from the inside out - taking the space required for each part of the dwelling and building out from that.

Like Victoria, I think minimal is about creating something that is small but not the absolute minimal. What is the point of designing something that is not really useable because it feels too squishy to be in. I think its really interesting to think about how small you can make something but still make it a reasonable place to exist in.

You say you are thinking about removing the glass from your design. One issue we will all have to deal with on that site is how to provide shelter form the elements but still have access to the view and breeze. I have been looking at screening options which I will put on the blog in case anyone is interested.
