In our group we have been wondering whether or not to sink our building into the ground. We could see that there were two advantages; thermal value and also blend the building more into the landscape.
Last night I spoke to my friend who lived in that area for 20 years. It seems when the rain comes (average 154mm for January according to BOM figures) the earth is unable to absord that concentrated amount of water. The soil is very sandy and water just runs though it to an arterial basin. At times of high rainfall, the soil over the whole plane cannot absord more water so it sits on top. Our idea of draining the water off the site would not work as there is nowhere to drain it to - the whole flat landsape floods. When the Fitroy River swells with the heavy rain it is the second largest river in the world.
Ironically, despite the incrediblly parched appearance of the landscape, watersupply will never be a problem in that area as the arterial basin can supply lots (via a bore).
I think sinking the building is not a good option on this site.
